Project Overview:
The overall aim was to successfully get through to the second round of the DESNZ AEM project and receive funding. My work successfully secured Chameleon Technology Ltd a place on the second stage of this project.
I conducted a comprehensive consumer behaviour research project - The aim of this project was to gather data on consumer interest in future possible ways of buying and paying for household energy. This was to submit in a presentation along with future energy price projections from alternative energy experts. Presenting conceptual ideas to consumers in an easy digestible way and gathering a wide scope of quantitative data from the relevant consumers. Role and Responsibilities:
As the lead User Researcher, I designed the research to hit all the project aims, working with energy industry experts including - Cornwall Insights and Energy Catapult. I built a detailed and comprehensive survey that detailed packages of energy bundles for consumers to buy. Analysis the data collected and present this in a PowerPoint presentation to be submitted to The department of Energy Security and Net Zero. Research Goals:
These bundles were correctly priced and matched industry predictions for future household needs. As well as describing the energy packages, I needed to find out how consumers wished to purchase green energy products such as home heat pumps, solar panels, batteries and electric vehicle chargers.
- Design green energy packages suitable for households in 2030 +
- Identify consumer appetite for alternative energy and ways to pay for their energy.
- Find out how/when/if consumers wished to install heat pumps, solar panels with batteries and electric vehicle chargers at home. If not - what the barriers are.
- Include findings from a wide range of households, including those in fuel poverty.
Methodology:
To achieve these goals, I worked with energy market experts to design correct pricing for packages of energy - similar to mobile phone packages.
- User Research: I built and conducted an in depth survey that received over 1000 replies from consumers who use the ivie energy app.
- Analysis; Once the survey had been completed by enough consumers, I began detailed analysis and translated the findings into an accessible visual presentation that I submitted to DESNZ.
- Usability Testing: Conducted testing sessions to validate findings and gather user feedback.
Process:
- User Research: I built and conducted an in depth survey that received over 1000 replies from consumers who use the ivie energy app.To achieve these goals, I worked with energy market experts to design correct pricing for packages of energy - similar to mobile phone packages.
- Analysis; I conducted detailed analysis and translated the quantitative findings into an accessible visual presentation that I submitted to DESNZ.
Findings:
The research revealed several key insights, including:
- Consumer distrust of energy companies and government agencies.
- Appetite for green energy and alternative ways to pay for energy.
- Opportunities for those on a low income to install alternative energy technology.
Impact:
The impact of this research fed the next stage of this AEM project which involved installing green energy technology into consumers homes at a discounted rate to allow Chameleon Technology to test energy bundles in a real life setting. This long term study would not have been possible without the initial research I designed and conducted. Reflection:
This project was challenging, there was a tight ridgid deadline which meant I had to fit a lot of conceptual information into the survey and make sure it was clear, avoiding industry jargon. The outcome was better than I had expected. If I conducted this research again I would be able to draw on a deeper knowledge of energy markets than I had at the beginning of the project. I would also have included more open questions in the survey to allow participants to give their opinions. Conclusion:
This project was successful, all the aims were achieved within the tight time frame, the analysis and presentation were conducted within a week and successfully explained the findings to DESNZ. With more time I would have liked to conduct interviews after the survey and spend more time analysing findings to better answer the users needs. Links:
